Pair of Chinoiserie Oil Paintings, Circle of Jean-Baptiste Pillement
Pair of Chinoiserie Oil Paintings, Circle of Jean-Baptiste Pillement
An exceptional pair of large-scale Chinoiserie oil paintings on canvas, cataloged by Freeman’s as Circle of Jean-Baptiste Pillement (French, 1728–1808).
Rendered in a soft celadon green and ochre palette, the compositions feature fantastical architectural structures, birds, figures, foliage, and ornamental flourishes arranged around sweeping central cartouches. The elongated proportions and imaginative imagery embody the theatrical beauty of European Chinoiserie and give the pair remarkable decorative presence.
The works were offered by Freeman’s in its European Art & Old Masters sale on January 27, 2015, with an auction estimate of $3,000 to $5,000. Their scale, documented auction history, and richly detailed compositions make them an especially compelling pair.
